Gleaning

I stayed at a warmshowers place in Burlington. And got a bed (!) and a wonderful gleaned meal. Traditionally “gleaning” is when poor people clean up the fields after the harvest and take what they find for themselves. Hence when I remember correctly that is what Ruth used to do ( the biblical Ruth). Nowadays you use that term also when you collect food from supermarkets or factories that they cannot sell in order to avoid food waste. My hosts are in gleaners association. As a member you have to pay a small amount of money to the association and you have to work a small number of hours for them each month but you may then take all the food you need.
